It is an architectural competition on designing the refurbishment of the local baroque palace – currently operating as a Children’s Home together with a primary school built in the ‘30s in modernist style – and a new Sports Hall.
Bakonyoszlop is a small village North of the lake Balaton in Hungary. The buildings are located in the large park of the palace. The new Sports Hall had to be inserted between the two existing buildings. The architectural concept is based on the intention to create a new building which is partly hidden in the slope of the park and tries to give as much space for the existing buildings and the natural beauty of the landscape as possible.
The Sports Hall is not visible entering the park but it is easy to access both from the palace and the school. Since the building is partly recessed under the ground it was possible to create a significantly smaller visible volume than it is functionally necessary.
The architectural solutions and details of the building are the contemporary reinterpretations of the typical regional modernist architecture using the local red limestone. The functional layout of the building is clear and simple which makes the proposal operable.
