Ice Rink Városliget

This project is an architectural competition that was held in 2002 on designing the refurbishment of the national heritage listed building of the Open-air Ice Rink in Városliget – a large public park in Eastern Budapest – and a new Technical Building housing all the necessary technical facilities of the ice rink. Also the part of the assignment was to design the landscape architecture of the Lake of Városliget which covers the whole ice rink during the summer months and operates as a leisure rowing lake.

The assignment was quite complicated not only because of the functional complexity of the project but also because of the heritage characteristics of the site. All the heritage buildings of Városliget have to be handled visually together with the really strict functional and safety needs of the Technical Building.

Finally this situation resulted an architectural solution in which the Technical uilding is hidden under the ground from the pedestrian promenade (Olof Palme Promenade) so it is not disturbing the sight of the Castle of Vajdahunyad which is just opposite of the Ice Rink on the other shore. The rooftop of the Technical Building smoothly follows the little slope of the shore, it is covered by green roof and it works as a local high point from where the spectacular view of Városliget is even more delightful.

The building has only one real façade - from the lake - and it tries to behave more as a surface not as a building. On winter evenings, when the Ice Rink is open, the horizontal steel lamellas appears to be, a play of lights.

The proposal also invented a flexible ephemeral structure for the summer use of the lake - which can be easily installed on the grid of the ice rink - and helps to provide permanent use for the building all year long - as a summer terrace during the warmer months.
The proposal won the first prize of the Jury.
