Gervay 4

The small villa built in the 1920s stands in a special residential area of the Zugló district in Budapest, Hungary. By reconstructing and extending the old structure with a new staircase and a floor under the roof the building is now functioning as the headquarters of a small and dynamic IT business.

The building had been built as a two-storey residential villa with a mansard roof. During an earlier renovation taking place in the 1970s the building had been extended with another floor while the mansard roof disappeared.

When redesigning the building, on one hand it was a key issue to keep the characteristics of the original building, on the other hand it was very important to express the dynamic attitude of the client by creating a contemporary architectural element. The historical ornaments of the facade are restored to emphasise the values of the original building.

The extension is formed as a single contemporary element, which gives space for the old building, but at the same time it also embraces the existing volume. The form of the extension is conceived from the transformation of the shape of a mansard roof. The old and new building elements are only set in juxtaposition to create a new harmonic image.

The iconic golden cladding of the new extension is made of a special copper alloy (TECU-Gold) that has been used for the first time in Hungary. The material had been chosen in order to eliminate the direct mental identification of the roof and to give a special appearance to the extension that gives a new identity to the villa.
